At a glance:
A building society roll number is a number that helps to identify an account in a building society.
It can be used when sending money to a building society account.
If you are a YBS member, you can find it in the app and in your online account.

What is a building society roll number used for?

You use a building society roll number to identify an account at a building society. It must be used to make sure money goes to the right person’s account.

Sending money from a current account to a building society

When you sent money to a building society, you’ll need the usual name, account number and sort code. You’ll also need the building society roll number.

Where do I use the roll number?

The building society roll number goes in the “reference” section of the money transfer page on the website or app you are using.

So, instead of adding a reference like “shopping”, or “holiday money” when you transfer, you’ll add in the roll number of the account you want to send money to.

What other details will you need to send money to a building society?

If you want to send money to a building society savings account from your current account, it’s not the only number you’ll need.
